*If you live outside of the Philadelphia area you have probably never heard of Selene Raynor; but you are going to learn about her tonight. It's important, because I want the folks who read this blog to understand the detestable loathsome and unspeakable things that we do to the ones who we are supposed to be loving and caring for.
"Police today filed murder charges against the boyfriend of a West Chester University student found shot to death yesterday in North Philadelphia.
Tyrell Hart, 19, was arrested last night at his home and questioned at the Roundhouse.
Selene Raynor, 21, was found slumped over the wheel of Jeep on the 1900 block of Newkirk Street in the city's Strawberry Hill section yesterday afternoon.
Raynor, a chemistry major in her third year at the University, was last seen with Hart Wednesday night, said Capt. James Clark, commander of the Homicide Unit.
Raynor picked Hart up in her mother's vehicle and drove to Newkirk Street "to talk about some aspect of their relationship," Clark said.
At some point, Hart pulled out a gun and shot her once in the head, Clark said.
After the shooting, Hart got out of the vehicle and went home, where he took a shower and went to bed, Clark said.
He said he was not aware of any prior domestic violence incidents between the Raynor and Hart.
"From all accounts she was a very nice young lady," the homicide commander said. "It just seemed like she got hooked up with the wrong guy."
Students held an imprompu [sp] memorial for Raynor at the university's Sykes Union Ballrooms last night.
A statement issued by Pam Sheridan, a WCU spokeswoman, said the turnout at the vigil showed that "Selena was a special young lady who touched the lives of many on campus."
The statement said Raynor had been active in campus life and had been involved in the unversity's Gospel Choir, Black Student Union, and Student Activities Council.
"Our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy go out to the Raynor family during this very difficult time," the statement said. "The loss of a member of the campus community touches us all."'
Selene Raynor was also eight weeks pregnant, and I have it from some pretty good sources that she was killed for that very reason. Still, you read this story and you can't help but wonder what type of monster we created. "He got out of the vehicle and went home where he took a shower and went to bed."?
When you go to bed tonight please don't forget about Selene Raynor. I know I won't.
